The Hotter'N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls stands as one of the USA's oldest and largest annual cycling events. Riders from across the globe flock to Wichita Falls, TX, for four days of challenging and inspiring activities. It takes place annually on the 4th or 5th Saturday in August, specifically nine days before Labor Day. This iconic event welcomes both professional and amateur riders to participate in its thrilling activities.
Races
The Hotter'N Hell Hundred is a four-day challenge for the strongest and the most enduring—cyclists who face the wind and unbearable heat along their route, and everyone can take part in this competition, choosing between 25-, 50-, 75-, and 100-mile rides. The cycling event also features a Golden Wheel, USA Cycling Criterium Race, USA Cycling Road Race, the Hotter'N Hell Hundred Endurance Ride, an Off-Road bicycle race, and an off-road trail run. On top of that, organizers offer a scenic 10K ride route, perfect for younger riders and family members. The start line cannon goes off at 7:05 am for all distances.
Rest Stops
Throughout all routes of the Hotter'N Hell Hundred, participants receive helpers' support and provide fresh fruit, snacks, and water along the way. These helpers are stationed at rest stops spaced approximately every 10 miles on all Endurance Ride routes, with stops placed closer together towards the end of the challenging 100-mile route. Upon reaching the Finish Line Village, riders can look forward to plenty of entertainment and food as they celebrate completing their journey.
Activities
The cycling event also includes a Consumer Show, Spaghetti Dinner, Sports Massage services, and outdoor entertainment at 2nd and Lamar. The festivities kick off with block party activities at the Downtown Farmer's Market.
Registration Prices & Parking
Participants at the Hotter'N Hell Hundred can choose from a variety of events, each with its own registration fee. Endurance rides are available for $50-60 while joining a pace group for the 100-mile ride costs $350. Those seeking an ultimate challenge can opt for the Golden Wheel Individual Registration at $500 or explore multi-event challenges priced between $120 and $240. The Grava del Fuego and Wee-Chi-Tah Mountain Bike Races are $60 each, while the 10K Trail Run registration fee is $45. Private parking lot owners around downtown have generously opened their lots for free parking during the event.
History of the Hotter’N Hell Hundred
In search of a way to celebrate the Wichita Falls centennial in 1982, Roby Christie from the Wichita Falls Bicycle Club suggested a unique event: a 100-mile bicycle ride in 100-degree heat. This daring proposal led to the creation of the Hotter'N Hell Hundred. Over 14,000 riders from all over the U.S. come every year to participate in this unforgettable race.
