This recreational bike race is one of the best-known in the world and is considered to be one of the most prestigious. It takes place around Lake Vättern, with a circuit of 186 miles (300 km) and is a great chance to challenge yourself, while enjoying the Swedish wildlife scenery.
Race Route & Program
The first race started in 1966, and since then, it's been considered a bucket-list experience. Every June this event is anticipated by many cyclists around the world. The participants start at Motala church, go all around Lake Vättern, and finish at the same spot. Because this race is purely recreational, there are no winners or losers, so you'll have a chance to focus on your own goals and set personal records. The cyclists are all given a chip that tracks the start and finish times of the race.
Location
In addition, the race provides one of the most beautiful and comfortable environments you can encounter while biking. Boasting an expansive area of 738 square miles (1,900 sq km) Lake Vättern is one of the largest lakes both in Europe and Sweden. Nestled in between forests and natural reserves, this lake is well-known among the local fishmongers as a prime spot for crayfish fishing.
Schedule
The event takes place in mid-June during the peak cycling season. All participants have their own starting time and are sorted into groups, consisting of 50 cyclists. The starting times are generally scheduled from 7:30 pm until 6:30 am. Although the scheduling might seem unusual, this gives you an amazing opportunity to witness the sunset and sunrise above the lake. The sub-groups of fast cyclists kick off their race at 11:30 am on the second day.
Registration & Admission
Demand exceeds supply, and participants must apply well in advance. The entry fee costs 1,650 Swedish krona if you register online. If you're participating in a group of more than ten people or register at the starting line, you are required to pay 1,900 Swedish krona.
Other races
Interestingly, the race is not only for advanced riders. There are many options for children and less trained cyclists as well. These include Minivättern, a fun day for children full of biking activities, Tjejvättern race for women, and Vätternrundan, with a 62-mile (100 km) track for everyone, including electric bikes.
