Seattle to Portland (STP) is an iconic bike ride recognized by Bicycling Magazine among America's top 10 recreational cycling events. This epic event spans 206 miles (332 kilometers) and typically occurs on July's second or third weekend. With approximately 8,000 riders participating, the goal is to journey from Seattle to Portland within one or two days!
Schedule & Route
The start Line for one-day riders is from 5 am to 5:30 am at the University of Washington Parking Lot E-18 in Seattle. The Start Line is open from 5:30 am to 7:30 am for Two-Day Riders. The Finish Line in Portland at Holladay Park is accessible from 10 am to 7 pm. About 2000 riders are able to complete STP in one day, though for the majority of riders, it takes two days to finish. About 30 mi (48 km ) of the route is uphill. The ride lies through country roads, avoiding busy Interstate 5. Participants pass Lake Washington, Mount Rainier, and Mount Saint Helens, as well as countless lush valleys and green forests of Washington and Oregon states.
Rest Stops
Riders can find five official rest stops at miles 20, 54, 106, 146, and 176, offering a variety of free snacks, fruit, and PB&Js. Additionally, there are thirteen official mini-stops located along the course. Complete medical assistance and bicycle repair will be available at the official midpoint stop situated at Centralia College. At the finish line, riders can collect their finisher meal, explore the beer garden, take photographs, receive their finisher T-shirt, and arrange for their bikes to be transported back to Seattle using the bike truck.
Registration & Price
For non-members of Cascade Bicycle Club, the fee ranges from $190 to $210, while members enjoy a discounted rate of $170 to $190; youth aged 18 and under can participate for just $80. The registration fee includes your participation, access to rest stops, ride support, baggage truck service, a meal at the finish line, and an STP finisher T-shirt. Additional services such as parking, bus passes, and bike transport can be purchased separately. Early start line bag and bike drop options are available for purchase on-site on the Friday before STP. Lodging arrangements should be arranged directly with the hosts.
History of STP
Seattle to Portland was started in 1979 by the Cascade Bicycle Club. First, it was designed as a race, but in 1981 the format was changed into a recreational ride. The winner of the inaugural race was Jerry Baker from Seattle.
