The Vienna Danube Island Festival, known as Donauinselfest, is one of Europe's most significant open-air festivals that draws about 3 million visitors annually to the scenic Danube Island in Vienna at the end of June. Over the years, the festival has hosted an array of world-famous stars, including Scorpions, Falco, Bonnie Tyler, Bloodhound Gang, and many more. Even more remarkable is that entry to this extravaganza of music and entertainment is completely free, thanks to the dedication of its organizers, employees, partners, and sponsors.

Each day features a wide range of activities catering to different interests, including music, sports, cultural performances, children's activities, and more. From electronic dance music, rap, metal, and pop dance to traditional Viennese performances and inclusive concerts, there's a sound to suit every ear. For the sporty types, there are thrilling basketball and beach volleyball tournaments, while the adventurous can experience the adrenaline rush of a sky flight. Safety demonstrations and interactive military displays provide both education and excitement, while art enthusiasts can explore unique finds at the pop-up design market. With beer pong, yoga, and many other activities, this festival promises an unforgettable weekend of entertainment and discovery.

Schedule

The festival kicks off on Friday, June 21, with a packed schedule of activities running from 11:30 am until midnight. Saturday, June 22, promises another exciting day, starting at noon and continuing until 12:30 am. The festivities continue into Sunday, June 23, with activities running from 12:00 midday until midnight.

Music Lineup

At the core of Donauinselfest lies three days of non-stop music spread across an impressive 4.5 km stretch on 14 stages. The main stage hosts headline acts, while others feature diverse genres. This year's program promises an eclectic mix, including everything from the indie-rock charm of Nino aus Wien & die AusWienBand to the electrifying fusion of reggae and metal by SKINDRED, each day offers a unique journey through diverse musical landscapes. Among the nearly 2,000 acts and 600 hours of live music, there's something for every musical taste, including high-energy performances, anthemic tunes, and captivating storytelling.

Family-Friendly Fun

Excitement awaits both the young and the young at heart at the OKIDOKI Children's Friends stage. Delightful games and family-friendly entertainment are on the agenda, featuring captivating performances like Mr. Magic Junior's mesmerizing magic show, lively tunes from children's songwriter Bernhard Fibich, and the classic antics of Punch and Judy, all making a special appearance on the island.

Food

When hunger strikes, festival-goers won't be disappointed. A wide array of food stalls cater to diverse tastes, offering everything from traditional Austrian cuisine to international delights like Thai, Greek, Italian, Indian, and Turkish fare, as well as vegetarian options, ensuring there's something to satisfy every palate.

Transportation

Due to limited parking, opt for public transit. Direct routes from subway stations like Handelskai (U6) and Donauinsel (U1) streamline commuting with shortened intervals during peak times. Tram lines 25, 26, 31, and bus 29A also offer convenient access. Visitors from other states can seamlessly connect via Vienna Central Station or Vienna Westbahnhof to the U1 and U6 lines. Bicycles and e-scooters are not allowed on-site, but secure parking options are nearby, including bike racks and guarded ARBÖ garages.

History

For those curious about the festival's origins, it all began with the "Cultural Spring Festival" in 1983, which paved the way for the inaugural Danube Island Festival in 1984. Since then, it has evolved into a beloved tradition, showcasing the best of music, culture, and entertainment against the picturesque backdrop of Vienna's Danube Island.
