Belgian National Day, celebrated annually on July 21, commemorates Belgium's political and cultural independence from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830. This significant day in Belgian history marks the swearing-in of King Leopold I, the country's first monarch, who pledged allegiance to the newly approved Belgian Constitution. In honor of this event, Brussels is decorated in the Belgian flag (black, yellow, and red) colors, celebrating its National Day in grand style with a plethora of events organized by various governmental bodies and organizations.
Celebration of Independence
The festivities begin on July 20, with the National Ball at Place du Jeu de Balle, featuring outdoor dance initiations and free concerts, setting the tone for the celebrations to come. On the morning of July 21, the Royal Family and dignitaries attend a Te Deum mass at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, while across the city, festivities unfold in Brussels Park and various surrounding areas. The day offers a diverse range of activities for all ages, including sports workshops, cultural performances, and museum visits. The highlight of the celebration is the civil and military parade and aircraft show. The festivities culminate with a spectacular fireworks display lighting up the night sky above Brussels, marking the end of a day filled with commemoration and celebration.
National Ball
On July 20, at 7:30 pm, the Place du Jeu de Balle in the vibrant Marolles district transforms into a dance floor under the open sky. Here, everyone is invited to join in the festivities, regardless of their dancing prowess. Led by the infectious beats of Louis Lou and accompanied by live performances from renowned artists such as Romeo's, Stella, and others, attendees are swept up in the jubilant atmosphere of the evening. Access to the National Ball is free. As the night progresses, hunger and thirst are easily satisfied by the bars of the Bal National and nearby cafes, offering a variety of refreshments and snacks.
Resto National
The festivities continue on July 21 with the Resto National, where locals and visitors alike gather for a feast of mussels and fries on the Place du Jeu de Balle. Tables are set up from 5 to 10 pm to accommodate everyone. Amidst the delicious fare, attendees are treated to the vibrant sights and sounds of majorettes, marching bands, and traditional Belgian music. The evening crescendos with a musette ball hosted by the Rita & Les Martins orchestra, followed by a collective singing session with 'Bruxelles Zingt' and the Orde van de brusselse moestasje.
Parade and Airshow
The impressive civil and military parade commences at 4 pm on the majestic Place des Palais. The great procession showcases the strength and unity of Belgium, with divisions from the Belgian army, police, and emergency services proudly marching through the city streets. Led by Major General Jean-Pol Baugnée, commander of the Land Component, accompanied by a fleet of Military Police motorcycles, the parade also features an awe-inspiring air parade, including 10 F-16s, along with a variety of helicopters and other aircraft. Following this aerial spectacle, foot soldiers from various military units and the Royal Military School join the procession that passes in front of the Royal Palace and around the Parc de Bruxelles.
Evening Concert and Fireworks
Continuing the tradition from the previous year, Belgian National Day will conclude with a grand "Happy Belgium" concert at Cinquantenaire Park, starting at 9 pm. Large screens will be set up across the park to ensure everyone can enjoy the show, while food trucks and bars will provide refreshments. The festivities will reach their climax at 11 pm with a mesmerizing display of lasers, lights, and fireworks.
Transport
Attendees should anticipate disruptions to traffic and changes to public transport schedules. City authorities strongly recommend using trains or metro services, which will be reinforced and extended into the evening. Additional parking will be available on the outskirts of the city, particularly in Kraainem, Heysel, Delta, and Roodebeek (metro).
