History of San Francisco Marathon

The San Francisco Marathon, organized by the Pamakids Runners Club, held its first race on July 10, 1977, with fewer than 900 participants. Athol Barton, a taxicab driver from Reno, Nevada, won the inaugural marathon in 2:24:59. The event's record for marathon finishers was set in 1983 with 7,231 participants. Participation grew to approximately 21,000 by 2009. In 2005, 356 of the 4,873 finishers qualified for the Boston Marathon, with varying numbers of qualifiers in subsequent years. The prize purse has fluctuated, with no prize money offered since 2005 due to a lack of large sponsors.
