Festa Junina, or the June Festival, is a Christian tradition that takes place every year in Brazil during June and draws inspiration from European Midsummer traditions that honor the harvest and saints such as Saint Anthony, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Peter. While rooted in religious observances, the focus of Festa Junina is primarily on fostering extensive social gatherings characterized by dancing, drinking, and feasting, particularly evident in larger urban areas.

The main festivities in Rio are celebrating the nativity of Catholic saints—Saint Anthony (June 13), Saint John the Baptist (June 24), and Saint Peter (June 29). Throughout the month, the celebrations include large bonfires, local food, country music, costumes, dancing, drinking, and even fireworks. The parties are held in giant tents with straw roofs. Traditional music and dances like quadrilhas are performed, where couples whirl around in a mock peasant wedding—casamento caipira—a symbol of the fertility of the land and a staple of the Festas Juninas.
Festivities are accompanied by a wide array of food items made from corn and peanuts, such as hominy, pamonha, and pé de moleque, along with beverages like quentão. Another prevalent tradition is dressing up in a caricatured manner. Men usually wear straw hats and peasant clothes, while women paint freckles, gap teeth, and checkered dresses. Girls often wear denim shorts; some go further by braiding their hair and painting freckles on their cheeks, but overall, dressing up in some fashion is common during the festivities.

Historians suggest that Festa Junina originated from pagan European summer solstice festivities aimed at protecting harvests. As Christianity spread, these pagan traditions were assimilated into Catholic celebrations, aligning with the honoring of figures like Santo Antônio, São João, and São Pedro in June. This Christianization process, common in the Catholic Church, blended pagan customs with Christian elements to ease conversion. While Festa Junina has religious roots, its focus is primarily on fostering a large social gathering centered around dancing, drinking, and feasting.
