The New Orleans Red Dress Run is an annual event held on the second Saturday in August, organized by the New Orleans Hash House Harriers. Known as a “drinking club with a running problem,” this race is perfect for runners who enjoy a good drink, as participants consume alcohol instead of the usual water. One of the largest events of its kind, it attracts participants from around the globe. The New Orleans Red Dress Run captures the essence of hashing: camaraderie, individuality, and adventure, offering a unique experience that blends global tradition with the vibrant charm of one of America’s most dynamic cities.

Schedule and Location of Red Dress Run

Participation in the New Orleans Red Dress Run begins at 9:30 am with beer flowing from trucks outside the park as attendees prepare for the event. At 10 am, Red Dress Runners line up on N Peters for the start of the run. By 11:30 am, after the run, participants can enjoy lunch featuring food from various New Orleans restaurants, all while live music plays in the background. The Red Dress Run starts at Crescent Park. The route remains secret until the day of the run, but the itinerary usually covers the Marigny and French Quarter neighborhoods.

Red Dress Run Rules

The major rule for participation is that you must be 21, making this event for adults only. All participants, both men and women, are required to wear their favorite red dress. Wearing the same dress two years in a row is considered bad manners, so repeat participants can take advantage of a red dress swap to get a fresh look. The colorful attire, abundant alcohol, and fun atmosphere ensure a memorable party. Tutus, devil horns, fezes, bows, headdresses, beer can hats, and heels—if they can be worn, Red Dress runners have likely worn them. Thrift stores are a popular choice for both male and female runners to find their outfits, and some participants have even gained viral fame with their flashy ensembles.

Run Tips

Participants should consider bringing a fanny pack to avoid being weighed down by a handbag. Wearing comfortable and breathable underwear is essential, as running about 5k on a hot day can be challenging. Headbands and sweatbands are also recommended to wipe off sweat, especially with drunk runners bumping into each other. It's important to check shoelaces to prevent tripping. True runners should pace themselves, allowing time to enjoy a beer or two at each stop and interact with the cheerful folks along the route.

Registration

Admission for this event is $65-$75, depending on how close to the date you register. Pre-registration is also available online with a $4 processing fee. The registration includes donations to local charities and special live music and beers for the run.
