Florida doesn't come to mind when people think "Christmas," but this can change if one takes an amazing Nights of Lights excursion. Every night at 5:30 pm, beginning before Thanksgiving and through to the end of January, St. Augustine glows and shines with holiday magic. One of the best holiday light displays in the world, according to National Geographic, St. Augustine's Nights of Lights showcase the historical architecture and beautiful scenery of the city.

The oldest city in the US seems indeed magical. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, the city still follows a Spanish tradition of putting a candle in the window for holidays, which creates a beautiful setting.

Best places to see the lights

Over three million lights decorate almost every corner of the historic district for two months. Businesses downtown stay open later, letting the public enjoy a unique ambiance and Christmas-time shopping. The city also runs special Christmas trolleys, cruising through the best-decorated places. Other options include electric cart tours, boat tours, and walking tours.

To enjoy Nights of Lights fully, walk through downtown, stopping at central Plaza de la Constitución and along the bayfront. Massive light displays are available at Flagler College and the Lightner Museum. The Tini Martini Bar in the Casablanca Inn boasts some of the best holiday decorations. Also, don't miss the view of the bayfront from the Bridge of Lions—it's an Instagram hit! Then, take a ride through Ponte Vedra and the beaches along Florida's Historic Coast.

Light-Up! Night (November 23, 2024)

The annual Light-Up! Night is a great way to celebrate the arrival of holiday season in the city. Festivities, which begin at 4 pm, feature musical performances on the stage at Plaza de la Constitución and in front of St. Augustine's City Hall. The Light-Up! Night switch is flipped at 6:30 pm at Plaza de la Constitución. The ceremony is followed by an hour-long music concert.
